Bernard F. Hectus

JORDANVILLE-Bernard Francis Hectus age 87 passed away peacefully on Monday February 14, 2022 in his home.  He was born on August 5, 1934 in Ilion, son of the late Albert and Agnes Peplinski Hectus.  Bernie was raised and educated in Mohawk.  Upon completing high school he enlisted in the US Army where he served in Germany.  He was honorably discharged in 1956.  On August 5, 1958 he was united in marriage to the former Carol Peck in the Christ Lutheran Church in Little Falls.  It was that year he, with his wife Carol moved to Jordanville.  Mr. Hectus worked for Lovenhiems' Carpeting in Little Falls and was known for his ability as a master carpet layer.  For fifty-four years he carpeted the floors of many of the churches in the Mohawk Valley as well as businesses and homes.  He retired in 2007.  Bernie had a strong faith in God and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Little Falls.  In his leisure time he was an accomplished oil painter.  He took many art classes and shared his God given talent with his friends here and overseas.  He was fond of old cars and he with his wife Carol would go to many of the area car shows and enjoyed driving his cherished "1937 Ford".  To all who knew him, they will never forget a caring, knowledgeable and devoted family man.  He will be sadly missed.

Surviving him are his loving wife of sixty-three years, Carol, a son Paul Hectus of Denver, CO, two daughters, Sharon Carlson of Glens Falls, Kristin Vivyan and her husband James of Jordanville, a sister, Harriett Phetterplace and her husband Charles ("Jake") of Dennison Corners, four cherished grandchildren, Michael Dingman of Indianapolis, IN, Joseph Vivyan, Dugan Vivyan and Stormie Vivyan all of Jordanville, several, nieces, nephews and cousins.  Besides his parents he was preceded in death by an infant daughter Elaine Hectus in 1968, a brother Leo Hectus in 2011 and a sister Julia Markley most recently. Calling hours for Mr. Hectus will be on Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs.  A funeral service will follow immediately after at 7:00 pmwith the Reverend James Barnes, pastor of the VanHornesville United Methodist Church officiating.  Interment in the VanHornesville Cemetery with military honors provided by the US Army will be later this spring.  Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the American Heart Association.  Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home.
