Carl J Hoag

Ilion – Carl John Hoag, age 59, of North Fifth Avenue, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, August 31, 2026, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

Carl was born on August 27, 1967, in Cooperstown, a son of Dorothy Mayton Robellard and the late Richard Carl Hoag. He was raised in Van Hornesville and attended Owen D. Young Central School.

Farming was an important part of Carl’s life from an early age. He worked alongside his father on the family’s fifth-generation Chyle Valley Dairy Farm in Springfield, where he developed a lifelong passion for dairy farming and the farming way of life. Carl was also naturally mechanically inclined and had a remarkable ability to understand how things worked. There seemed to be nothing he couldn’t fix, and he could often figure out how to repair something simply by putting his mind to it.

Carl also enjoyed lifting weights and spending time with his friends at Route 80 Bowl in Van Hornesville. More than anything, Carl enjoyed the people in his life. He was a friend to many and will be remembered for the friendships he made and the memories he leaves behind.

Carl is survived by his mother, Dorothy Robellard, and his stepfather, Ronald Robellard; his daughter, Shailynne M. Hoag of Little Falls; his brother, Deown Hoag and his wife, Nicole, of Ilion; his sisters, Lisa Evans of Ilion, Denise Hoag of Fultonville, and Krystalea Nestle and her husband, Bryan, of Van Hornesville; his stepsister, Michele Robellard, and her longtime partner, Michael Shue; his stepbrother, James Robellard; his nephews, Dylan Evans and Jared Evans; as well as his niece, Avery Nestle.

He was predeceased by his father, Richard Carl Hoag.

Calling hours for Carl will take place on Saturday, September 12, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Inc., 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. A funeral service will immediately follow, with the Reverend Daniel Hoogheem officiating. Burial will take place at a time convenient to the family.

Carl was deeply loved, and the memories of his life, his friendships, and his years on the farm will remain with those who knew him. He will never be forgotten.
