RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Frank J. Callahan, age 92, Longtime Richfield Springs Businessman, passed away on Saturday August 31, 2024 in Little Falls Hospital.
Frank was born on July 25, 1932 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late Francis X and Kathleen Hawke Callahan. He was raised and educated in Ilion graduating from Ilion High School. After high school Frank served our nation in the United States Navy with the Naval Squadron. On May 3, 1969 he married the former Mary Burnside in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs a blessed union of fifty-three years until her passing in April of 2023. He worked for Chicago Pneumatic in Utica and Canada Dry Beverages before purchasing Harry's Restaurant in Richfield Springs operating it until the late 1970's. He obtained his Insurance License and became an independent insurance agent operating Callahan Insurance Agency for many years in Richfield Springs, retiring in 2015.
Frank was very active in the community, he was a Past President of the Richfield Springs Lions Club, where he chaired many Car Shows and Winter Carnivals, a member of the Richfield Springs American Legion Post 616, and a member of Independent Insurance Agents. In his free time Frank loved to golf, playing in many leagues and taking many trips to Myrtle Beach over the years.
He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.
He is survived by five daughters; Patty Callahan of Mohawk, Terri Sterling and her husband Kevin of Mohawk, Susan Callahan of Mohawk, Jennifer Southard and her husband David of Richfield Springs, Nancy Callahan of Oneonta, a stepdaughter; Candice Colvin, a sister Ruth Fazio of Utica, six grandchildren; Christa, Jeremy, David and his wife Nicole, Matthew, Marshall, and Joslyn.
A graveside service for Frank will be held on Friday September 6th at 12:00 noon in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs. A Celebration of Life to follow in the Richfield Springs Vets Club Lake Street, Richfield Springs after the graveside service.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in donations to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the Richfield Springs Vets Club envelopes will be available at the service.
The family is grateful for the care shown to Frank by the staff of Valley Health Services, Herkimer.
Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
