Gregg D. Van Alstine

RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Gregg D. Van Alstine, age 71, of Johnson Street, his life journey ended on Sunday Morning October 15, 2023 from cardiac complications, in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown.

He was born on January 11, 1952 in Herkimer a son to the late Richard and Nance Wheeler Van Alstine. He was raised and educated in Schuyler Lake attending school in Richfield Springs. After school he served our Nation with the United States Army. Gregg was a carpenter by trade, he started his career with Titan Homes, working for different companies over the years finishing with Barrier Windows in Westmoreland. On July 23, 1983 he was united in marriage with the former Bonita "Bonnie" Chapman in the Schuyler Lake United Methodist Church. A blessed union of forty years.

Gregg was an amazing woodworker, he loved to build things from wood. In his later years he enjoyed building model cars, especially Shelby Mustangs. He liked to golf, enjoyed watching NASCAR, he even tried fishing once with his grandson. If you knew Gregg he was a social person who loved being with his friends and family, plus, how could you forget the bonfires?

Surviving him besides his Bonita, are two daughters Ashley Ruiz and her husband Christopher of Richfield Springs, Chasity Van Alstine and her companion Cody Learned of Mohawk, a son William O'Donnell of Oneonta, three brothers; Terry Van Alstine and his wife Diane of Nebraska, Barry Van Alstine of Ilion, Brian Van Alstine and his wife Gulbin of Colorado, three sisters Donna Foster and her husband Ken of Richfield Springs, Joann Chapman and her husband Bradford of Schuyler Lake and Lorri Buell and her companion Chip Riano of Burlington Flats, six grandchildren; Austyn Sample, Adrionna Sample, Kyle Dyn, Emma Dyn, Nevaeh Ruiz and Liam Ruiz, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and a very special friend his Black Lab "Bailey Bob Thornton".

A celebration of life with Military Honors for Mr. Van Alstine will be on Sunday October 22nd in the Richfield Springs Vets Club from 2:00-4:00 pm.
