RICHFIELD SPRINGS – James R. Brashear, 82, of Keating Road, passed away on Monday evening, March 31, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at his home.
James was born on August 24, 1942, in Bradley, Oklahoma, to the late Robert L. Brashear and Evelyne M. Willoughby. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1962, contributing to efforts at the close of the Korean War. A man of deep faith, James was dedicated to his religion throughout his life, finding strength in his relationship with God. He married his loving wife, Maria Simonds, on May 1, 1997.
A true outdoorsman at heart, James could often be found at local auctions or working on his beloved tractors. In the warmer months, he had a special tradition of taking his grandchildren out on the lawn mower, the gentle hum of the engine lulling them to sleep as they enjoyed the fresh air. Even when his mobility became limited, James found peace in watching the birds outside his window, always finding beauty in the small things.
He is survived by his wife Maria, two sons; James R. Brashear Jr. and his wife Denise Connolly Brashear of Chatham, New Jersey, and Christian Brashear of Richfield Springs; a daughter, Morgan Park and her wife Helen Park of Rotterdam; two step sons, Justin Foster and Jason Foster; two brothers, Cecile Reynolds of Clifton Park, Jack Reynolds of Justin, Texas; a sister, Patricia O'Neill and her husband Jerry O'Neill of Moore, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren including Aidan Brashear, Madeline Brashear, Cameron Foster, Mason Foster, Bailey Foster, Nevaeh Davis-Brashear, Riley Foster, Joseph Foster, Stella Brashear, Autumn Foster, Amelia Brashear; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas, Larry, and Glen Brashear.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 13th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Richfield Springs Vets Club, 13 Lake Street, Richfield Springs. All who knew James are invited to join his family in honoring his memory and celebrating a life well-lived.
Funeral arrangements are J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home Inc. 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs.
