SPRINGFIELD CENTER -James P. Hurley , age 93 , passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon , August 4, 2022 , at Cooperstown Center Nursing and Rehabilitation in Cooperstown.
He was born on September 9, 1928 , in Holyoke, MA, the only son of the late Paul D. and Margaret M. Cassidy Hurley. He was raised in Holyoke with five sisters, Naureen, Margaret, Joanne, Patricia and Helen. Upon graduating from Holyoke High School with the class of 1946 he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as an Aviation Photographer's Mate Third Class in Bainbridge Maryland, Kodiak, Alaska and aboard the USS Bairoko. He was honorably discharged on April 27 th , 1953. He then continued his education at Columbia University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. For many years, Mr. Hurley was a used and rare book dealer before he moved to Springfield Center in 1991, coming from the Bronx. Mr. Hurley had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church in Springfield Center where he had sung in the church choir. To o those knew J im , they would say, he had a true sense of community. H e was a member of the Springfield Historical Society, AARP, Springfield Center Library Board, and Glimmerglass Opera Guild , occasional volunteer with Cooperstown Concert Series and rain measurer for SUCO Biological Field Station. Mr. Hurley will always be remembered as a kind and caring gentleman. He will be sadly missed.
Surviving him are his daughter Amy Margaret Hurley , several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11:00 am in Saint Mary's Episcopal Church, Springfield Center. The Reverend T. Kyle Gre nnen , Rector will officiate. Military honors provided by the US Navy will take place immediately after the funeral church service. Interment will be in Saint Jerome's Cemetery, Holyoke, MA at a later time.
