Jane Skiffington

RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Jane M. Skiffington, age 87, passed away peacefully on Friday evening March 11, 2016 in Valley Health Services, Inc., Herkimer. She had the support and comfort of her loving daughter at her side.

She was born on July 14, 1928 in Manhattan, daughter of the late Harold and Elizabeth Brady Wood. Jane was raised in the Bronx and was a graduate of Cathedral High School. She furthered her education graduating from Hunter College. On June 12, 1947 she was united in marriage with Lawrence Skiffington in Saint John's RC Church, Bronx. Together they shared a loving and devoted union of sixty-six years until his passing October 3, 2013. For twenty-five years Mrs. Skiffington was a first grade teacher in Saint Joseph's Parochial School on East 87th Street in Manhattan. She retired in 1987. In 1989 she and her husband Larry moved to Richfield Springs to enjoy their retirement. Jane had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker RC Church, Richfield Springs. She was a member of the Richfield Springs Lioness Club and the Richfield Springs Rotary Club. In her leisure time she enjoyed gardening around her home, reading and doing puzzles. To those who knew her, she was a warm, caring and gentle woman with an unforgettable smile. She will be truly missed.

Surviving is a daughter, Liza Wood Skiffington of Flanders, LI; her son-in-law, Gary Schechter; her cousin Marie Schaffner and her children; her mentor and lifelong friend Sister Rosalita McNamee of School Sisters of Notre Dame; and many dear friends in Richfield Springs. Besides her parents and husband Lawrence, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Laura Jane Skiffington and Carolyn Gerette Skiffington Schechter. A special thanks to Bob Pope for all of his special care and devotion.

Funeral service for Mrs. Skiffington will take place on Wednesday at 11:00 am in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs with Father Silvaster Sarihaddula, Pastor of Saint Joseph the Worker RC Church officiating. Interment in Saint Joseph's Cemetery will be later this spring. There are no calling hours.
