Marilyn Mawson Lyman

Marilyn Mawson Lyman from Syracuse died peacefully at age 89 early Friday morning 4/22/22 at her recent home with family who had lovingly cared for her over the last few years.

She was predeceased by her husband Fred of nearly 65 years in June of 2019.  She will be greatly missed by her 3 daughters - Ruth Lyman, Sarah Gerdeman and Martha Twichell and their families including 4 grandchildren and 4 greatgrandchildren as well as her "bonus daughter," Renetta Citron and family.

She was a powerhouse who cared for family, friends and the community through her professional and volunteer work and activism.  She was proud of her efforts around voting, social justice, literacy, affordable education, overpopulation, parental choice, sex education, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, diversity, inclusion, mediation, and the environment.

Marilyn worked for Planned Parenthood as the Director of Education for 15 years and for the Red Cross for 10 years as the Director of Education and Community Services.  Marilyn's professional and volunteer organization accomplishments were recognized with numerous awards over the years, including the Red Cross Tiffany Award, Planned Parenthood Outstanding Achievement Award, Unsung Heroine Award from the National Organization of Women, and the Melvin Eggers Senior Alumni Award from Syracuse University.

While her memory was fading and body ailing, she was able to relax and enjoy the peace and "quiet" of the moment in her final years.  We love you and will miss you and your positive Pollyanna outlook always Marilyn, Mom, Nana.

A private family service will be held.  Those wishing to make a donation in Marilyn's memory may consider Planned Parenthood, The American Red Cross or your favorite charity.
