Thomas William Armstrong, 71 of Jordanville, NY died unexpectedly on July 23, 2026 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown surrounded by his family.
Born on November 3, 1954, Tom was the eldest child of Lillian and Thomas A. Armstrong. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1972.
He was united in marriage to Wanda Yerdon of Cherry Valley on April 21, 1973. Together they shared 53 years of memories raising their children, cultivating a strong work ethic, fostering a deep pride in workmanship and anchoring the family in the strong values that accompany farm life.
Through his early years of working with master carpenter A.C. Miller, Tom learned to appreciate good clean lines in architecture and fine woodworking.
He went to full-time dairy farming in 1980 and after semi retiring in 2015, raised beef cattle and harvested crops.
He was a meticulous farmer taking pride in the esthetic presentation of his farm, pristine condition of his machinery and awarded as Dairy of Distinction.
In the winter months when he wasn’t removing snow, he enjoyed snowmobiling with his friends and family, especially keeping up with his son, Adam.
He was a member of several snowmobile clubs and organizations. He met several buddies regularly for morning coffee to discuss local events and their daily plans.
Tom was known for growing the sweetest local sweetcorn that together his family would pick by the truckloads. He was a friend of many and will be truly missed.
Tom enjoyed his growing family, leaving behind a legacy of generosity, love, kindness and hard work.
He is survived by his mother Lillian, his wife Wanda, two children Adam and his wife Kelly, Brenda and her husband Kyle Merena, grandchildren Brenna (Ryan) Suwek, Emma Armstrong, Elise and Ethan Merena, great grandchildren Trenton and Charlotte Suwek, and nephew Jacob Laatsch, siblings Patricia Rood (Willie), Dennis Armstrong (Doreen), Diane Armstrong, and Eileen Laatsch (Dave).
He was preceded in death by his father Thomas A. Armstrong.
Calling hours will be held 4:00-7:00 pm Tuesday, August 4 at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home Inc. 40 West James Street Richfield Springs.
A service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 5th in the Springfield Cemetery Route 20 Springfield Center.
